Achille Devéria, Tony & Alfred Johannot, Alexandre Dumas, Eugène Süe, etc. - Album de la Mode - Chroniques du monde fashionable - 1833

Fashion, Illustrated, Literature - Quantity: 1 - Hand coloured illustrations - Book

This magnificent, one-of-a-kind keepsake, published in 1833, was designed to outshine the keepsake published in England or France which contained only illustrations by English artists.

The editors of this album called upon the best French artists and the most fashionable authors of the Romantic period.

This album brings together texts by Jules Janin, Henry Martin, Gustave Drouineau, the Viscount of Marquessac, Alexandre Dumas, Gustave Albitte, Émile Deschamps, Jules Lacroix, the Viscount of Arlincourt, the bibliophile Jacob, Petrus Borel and Eugène Süe.

It also features an half-title page with a black and blue steel engraving and 12 lovely original compositions, lithographed and coloured by hand, most of them by Achille Devéria, and the brothers Alfred & Tony Johannot.

Condition of the book: original cloth binding from the period. The cloth has become brittle over time, and there are lacks of cloth at both edges of the spine and at the outer edges of the two covers. The binding is otherwise sound and the spine is nicely decorated in romantic style with a golden background and floral motifs.
Inside: the inside covers in azure blue, on the back of the front cover is the bookplate of Paul Gavault (a French playwright and scriptwriter (1866 - 1951), former director of the Odéon). Some light foxing throughout the book, especially at the beginning and towards the end of the book. The 12 lithographs are wonderfully fresh. The lithograph of Alexandre Dumas' tale 'Un Bal masqué' is a bit browned and there is some foxing around the lithograph of Eugène Süe's tale 'Physiologie d'un appartement'.

A delightful testament to the fashion and literature of the Romantic period.
